Reading Program Tips
Choose an irresistible Theme
Orientaltrading.com has a bunch of theme ideas for parties.
These ideas work with reading programs too.

How about       Hollywood
  Island Luau
  Western Roundup
  Pajama Party
  Mardi Gras

Build Anticipation
Have students make posters to advertise around the          school.

Encourage students to wear related clothing or        accessories to school the day of the event.
(Ex: For island day, hats and sunglasses or shorts.)
Know your objective

Just like when planning a good class lesson, know what you want the families to get out of the event.

Some focus examples
Teach and practice fluency techniques
Model expressive reading aloud
Set family reading goals
Introduce the variety of offereings at the library

Strike a balance of fun and instruction

Try to keep in mind that the theme is to draw interest, it is not           the main reason you are having an event.

Your family night will be the most successful if you teach the             families something they can put into practice to improve and          enjoy reading in ther lives.
